The winning entries were picked for their ambition and impact. Currys ‘Long Live Your Tech’ (Changing Consumer Behaviour) resulted in 1.7 million items being brought in for repair, and away from landfill. Tesco’s partnership with food-sharing social enterprise, OLIO, has helped redistribute 4,500 tonnes of unsold food (Reducing Waste). And Asda’s new biogas trucks have helped remove 50,000 tonnes of CO2e from operations (Reducing emissions in transport and logistics).

Retailers have been taking innovative and bold steps, looking right through parts of their operations and supply chain. Other winning entries were Radley, who took a fresh look at their entire operations, from tanning the leather, to cutting it, to packaging it, in order to reduce waste. Morrisons, who worked with their farmers to find ways of lowering emissions in the production of beef, pork, lamb and eggs (Tackling Carbon Emissions in the Supply Chain). And Kingfisher, who almost halved the carbon intensity of hundreds of stores through installing heat pumps, insulation and LED lighting (Driving towards net zero properties).

Climate Action Week also brought insights to hundreds of member colleagues through webinars and reports delivered by Roadmap part ners. IBM Consulting provided guidance on a key member concern, tackling scope 3 emissions in upstream supply chains, building on guidance developed earlier in the year. Mitsubishi Electric also expanded on a hot topic, energy efficiency, with practical energy efficiency advice aimed at reducing emissions and cutting energy bills. Consultants BearingPoint brought transportation insights through their webinar on the future of net zero shipping and use of rail which will be accompanied by a briefing to be released shortly. Logistics was also the topic of a joint BRC/Evri report on cutting carbon in the final mile . OC&C Strategy launched a new report and webinar on moving consumers to sustainable choices , looking at the low carbon choices that consumers are currently prepared to make versus those that they need to make to achieve the biggest emissions reduction impact.

Other activities during the week were a webinar on setting science based targets and a CEO call on Climate Action – The Investor and Political Perspective. BRC Roadmap partner Mondra welcomed retailers and suppliers to The Form Rooms to report-back on the culmination of their Innovate UK funded carbon-foot-printing project with other partner guests including IGD, WRAP and WWF.
