RESPONSE IS THE ONLY WAY A BETTER SYSTEM FOR ALL CAN BE BUILT Over the past few months, BRC have been investigating a compromise that would limit the industry’s financial exposure whilst ensuring that recycling improves in the UK. It has become apparent that a mixture of some centralised functions and competitive elements are required to meet both the government’s stated objectives and pressure for improvement being exerted by consumers. Whatever the final outcome of this consultation, it is incumbent upon retailers to engage with the options and ultimate impacts of these policies. The ambitions of the consultation – to dramatically improve the way our waste packaging system works for improved transparency, traceability and a more circular waste system - are commendable. However, without active engagement from retailers now, the cost of doing business could dramatically increase – while our recycling system fails to deliver any more than it does today. The Government’s Consultation on reforming the UK packaging producer responsibility system closes on the 13th May.
