RETAILER/LANDLORD NET ZERO BUILDINGS PROTOCOL

N ovember saw the launch of our new Retailer/ Landlord Net Zero Buildings Protocol, developed as part of the BRC Climate Action Roadmap - an indus try-led initiative to get UK retail to Net Zero by 2040. There are 5 key Pathways to the ClimateAction Roadmap. This Protocol has been developed under Pathway 2 – focused on decarbonising retail estates. Created in partnership with our Pathway 2 Partner, The Crown Estate , and in conjunction with BRC retail members and landlords, the Protocol sets out a suite of principles to help retailers and landlords work together to bring building emissions to Net Zero. The intention is that retailers (as both ten ants and landlords) and landlords can sign up to these principles on energy efficiency and use of renewables, at the point of signing a new lease. It’s an important step in supporting greater collaboration and joint positive action from retailers and landlords in achieving Net Zero targets.

The Protocol also has the support of the British

“The Net Zero Building Protocol is a great oppor tunity for retailers and property owners to work together towards a greener future. The protocol is the first of its kind to address the sustainability of retail sites with an ambition to improve energy efficiency and embrace renewable energy. Climate action demands cross-industry collaboration, and this proto col gives retailers and property owners the language and structure to create a greener property market.” Helen Dickinson OBE, Chief Executive of the British Retail Consortium “Retail and real estate have a huge journey ahead on the transition to net zero, and decarbonising at the scale we need to see, will only be pos sible through collaboration between property owners and occupiers. This partnership is a really important step forward in identifying the practical ways our sectors can work together to tackle the crisis of our generation. We look forward to continuing towork together to turn this guidance into action.” JaneWakiwaka, Environmental Sustainability Director at The Crown Estate

Property Federation and Better Buildings Partnership.

“Landlords are committed and ambitious about retrofitting properties to improve energy effi ciency and deliver on net zero. We welcome an initiative that brings tenants and landlords together to reduce carbon emissions, as open dialogue and data-sharing will be vital to effec tive collaboration and delivery.” Melanie Leech, Chief Executive of British Property Federation “Wewelcome the publication of this protocol led by the BRC and its members. We look forward to sharing the protocol with BBPmembers, with the aim of encouraging greater collaboration between owners and occupiers to address climate change.” Sarah Ratcliffe, Chief Executive of the Better Buildings Partnership
